For weeks from my window I have viewed this small tree deep in my woods. It is still covered with leaves. I have wanted to venture closer but did not feel safe doing it alone. I know the woods are covered with years of accumulated limbs and trees that have fallen but did not know if there is a place that I might stumble and fall. Miss Callie starts out with me but soon is running in many directions.There was someone helping me clean brush yesterday. I told him I was taking off into the woods to take a picture of this tree. I felt safe with someone on the property.
For years I walked all over these woods with my dog and never gave safety a thought.
Time changes everything.

I love your little tree. It is amazing that it is still alive this time of the year. Your cake looks amazing. I will have to try it. I am copying the recipe. I like to put cakes on my stand, too. They just look better that way. We are waiting on the snow, too. Have a good weekend.
I'm pretty sure we have similar trees in our woods that have retained their leaves and I have no idea what they are. But, now you have me curious and I will have to do a little investigating. Looking at your picture I can see the tangle of limbs that might trip you up and I don't blame you for being cautious.
I am pretty sure they are beech trees and when young they retain their leaves through the winter. The leaves are such lovely caramel color and make crisp paper sounds in the wind. I have several...all sizes...in my woods.
Judy, wonder what kind of snow is headed our way? Barbra, Tabor says this is a Beech tree. I have several main paths in the woods.
One I can drive my truck on. Want to clear a path to this little tree. There it stands small and strong among the tangle of limbs.
Tabor, forgot to add that you have described it perfectly. When I look out my back windows I see it standing there - so strong and straight.
How interesting. I will be waiting for a picture of the new leaves in Spring....It does look like it would be in the beech tree family.

print a photo of your tree and show it to someone at a nursery near you in spring. they can tell you for sure what it is. cute little thing, isn't it?

I think it is beech too, but I can't be sure I'm remembering correctly. We have about 4-5 of those on our property. They don't lose their leaves until spring.
