Bumper Crop of Acorns

At Woodhave the
Acorns are falling like pennies from Heaven.
That is - if you are a squirrel.

They are everywhere, terrace, drive, garden, falling on cottage
and falling on my vehicle.
Have to be careful as I walk.
Hardly noticed any the last two years.
I wondered is it only me.
Googled it and
seems everywhere this is happening and many are wondering why?

I have nothing to base this on
just my deep sense of intuition
but think we are in for a bad winter.

Smart squirrels are busy storing the acorns.
They have not been visiting my bird feeders for several weeks..

A foggy morning will lead the way for a few nice days.
Continuing to clean up garden, rake leaves
in a few days and clean the overflowing gutter.

Now if some winds would arise
it sure would be a help to this One Woman.

Just we are in for a hard winter. I noticed when I was out to The Farm that there seemed to be more hickory nuts on the ground then in other years. God's way of providing winter food for his squirrels?

So many acorns, my little Molly Gael, loves to eat them and it can be deadly.

I love your cottage woodland happenings. If it is winds you wish, then I wish them for you too.

Thank you for my visits to nature.

((hugs))

Lots of berries in these parts like last year when we had an horrendous winter. Like you I fear we will have another one. Found your blog tonight, it is lovely.

very low berry crops here this fall which has been deadly for the bears - many in BC, Canada have been shot because they have been foraging for food in the villages. :(( so sad. they have to eat lots of berries in early fall in preparation for winter hibernation. i read the west coast is going to have a very cool 2012 like we did in 2011...still part of la nina's effects. we had such a cool summer that we didn't even plant one tomato! they called it a green tomato summer here.

Last year was our high mast year...many acorns. This year it seems back to normal.

We were deluged with acorns last year, and the snowstorms followed. This year few acorns have fallen, and I hope that means less snow, too.

My daughter has a bumper crop of acorns too in Wisconsin. I know what you mean about walking on them. Amazing that a huge Oak tree comes from that tiny little thing.

I have been told that pecans have alternate "good" years and "bad" years. I have found this, generally, to be the case. I have a couple of pecan trees in my yard and my dog (who loves to crack them and eat them) and I have been enjoying the bounty of the trees this year. Last year there were hardly any.

Let's hope the winter is tolerable and the critters--and we--have lots to eat!

LOVE that first photo...the angle and depth of it...shifts in perception.

Yes, we have grown up with the adage that plenty of food for the animals in the forest, signals a bad winter. Since winter is usually always bad for me, I guess it works. But when one falls on top of the car - BANG - it scares the daylights out of me.
