With my decision of moving to the country, not being in the city close to health facilities and a distance from
my children
I started checking to see if there were services available in this rural area that I was not familiar or
aware of.
I found Cumberland Transit.
Transportation for people in rural areas. It covers a number of rural counties in Tennessee and my
county is one of them.
You call several days prior to when you need them, schedule your time and they pick you up at your home and take
you to your destination. Also when you are ready to return home you call them and within an
hour they pick you up and take you home.
Now, I heard some say "if you need me let me know" but I do not respond to this. Independent and when someone is sincere you do not have to ask. But then following my heart is what I try to do.
Last week was an appointment with an oral surgeon that I was not comfortable with. So many unsettling experiences have been shared with me about the pulling of a wisdom tooth
and I wish I had not listened.
It was also a rainy and cold day and a good time to check this transportation source out.
I was picked up at 8:30 in the morning in a van with the nicest driver. Onward we went to the big
city, the procedure was no problem, and the pickup call was made when I was ready to leave oral surgeons office.
My youngest daughter (Jamie, thank you) was with me and we sat in the nearby Yogurt shop waiting for the driver.
It took about an hour but I did not mind as I am a people watcher and this gave me time to sit
still - which I have difficulty doing.
A small bus arrived this time. I was told he had to pick up someone in a small town neighboring mine and take her to my nearby small town.
I enjoyed the tour of country roads that I was not familiar with with and found it a peaceful ride as we traveled to pick up another customer.
Did take over an hour for me to arrive home but that was fine.
So now if there is a time I am not comfortable driving to the big city, I have another option. Bottom line I will be using this service again. I could even go one way and one of my children bring me home
in case of something special.
This service for all ages, they operate week days between 8:30 and 6:00. Have special pickups available earlier for hospital visits.
Being very independent I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this special service.
Only inconvenience might be if there were several pickups but with none on my going and only one returning I found it great.
Cumberland Transit - thank you......

We are still fortunate to live in a country where such services are available for elderly and infirm. I used to live in a very wealthy county that provided $1.00 taxi service for the elderly to almost anywhere. Unfortunately, these services may all fall by the wayside if budgets continue to de-value such socialistic activities. I am so glad your dental experience went smoothly. They seem to do this surgery so much more gently these days.
Tabor, it was a nice experience if I never use again. Wondered if it was for elderly and they told me available for any age. Instead of a bus in the city - guess a bus in the country. But kind of nice and personal. Did not even know I had the tooth pulled and no problem so far with healing.
Best wishes for the New Year....
Hi Ernestine,
Happy New Year. Glad to hear that your tooth experience gave you no problems.Dental care has come a long way. So much easier now.
I used to live in a small town where we had this kind of bus service. It gave people some peace of mind, knowing that they could still travel into the nearby city. The senior services were excellent in that town. Older people could stay in their homes and still have some manner of independence.
The town I live in now, has none of that. Moving here, late in life, I'm afraid that we will have to get by on our own. Our doctor is miles away and so is the hospital. It's very hard when one needs medical attention. You are so fortunate to have that service. Take care, Balisha
Balish, a reminder from my children that I made the decision to return to this rural area.
Yes, and I love it. So far all is well. Thanks for visiting,
So glad you found this service. Seems it will be nice for that kind of trip to the city....I am glad your tooth came out easily, mine did not. I seem to remember the dentist bracing himself with his foot on my chair as he tugged....also, had to get his mallet out. I am not making this up! Also got a dry socket (blood clot gets washed away exposing the bone) so do not rinse too vigorously.....SORRY for the details, but don't want you to get dry socket...... Again.....sorry
Beverly, thank you for visiting..
Independence (to me does) not mean doing it all yourself - it means figuring out how to get it done!! Lovely to know about the transportation service!! Yay for you...Ms.Independence!!
Having lost my husband to leukemia last year...and being disabled myself...I found myself in a similar situation...living far from the nearest town with limited travel options.
I have always been quite independent.
Now I have moved to the closest mid-city and like you- use our rural transit system to go anywhere...everywhere...isn't it amazing!
Carla
What a wonderful service for your community! I hate to think about having to call on my children to get me around and about in a few years.
Ernestine, How wonderful to find this amenity. I wonder what others might be in your neck of the woods. As I anticipate my move (hopefully within the next few months), I hope I'll find lots of little "percs" like this one you've discovered. It's so nice to know there are options out there, especially when one is single, and even if one is VERY independent (!) to make life a little easier.
I came by to thank you for checking in on me at my blog and by email from time to time. I actually posted a tiny post today! :)
I wish you a beautiful new year!
LR, so good to hear from you
Carla, yes, it is a wonderful service. Charlotte, :)
Ellen, this is a nice option. If I go with the hernia surgery end of month - wish I had someone just to visit for a day.
Aisling, you seem like one of my children and think of you often and wonder what is going on - take care of yourself - blessings sent to you.
Happy New Year Ernestine and I am so happy to read that your dental extraction was painless! Great to hear you have that trnsit system in place if needed. Nice to know!
Wishing you the best in 2012!
