Memory Of The Simple Hot Dog

We have several hot dog places that have opened in Nashville.
When I am in the big city
occasionally I make a stop.
Always trying to find one that compares to my memories.

Memories surface
of a  16 year old girl working after school and on Saturday
at the local dime store in Detroit, Michigan.
For the amazing sum of 50 cents an hour.

As you came in the entrance
there was the hot dog counter.
and they would be rotating on a warming machine
sizzling to perfection.
Buns in a warmer,
they were loaded with mustard, onions and chili.
and devoured.

To this very day
nothing has compared
to those hot dogs....

I think that that childhood memories of food are always better than anything we can try to recapture. Places get smaller, smells get weaker and tastes are just not quite the same.

Tabor, you are right. Barbara, oh yes, remember homemade ice cream at my grandmother's and have never tasted anything like it again :)

Hot dogs are one of my favorite things to eat. Not healthy though... and those healthy ones aren't very good. We had a hot dog stand "World's Best HotDog" and it was. You could get a dog fixed anywhay you wanted. My favorite was the Chicago Hotdog...with all the trimmings. One cooked over a campfire brings back some memories for me.

i loved chili dogs and slaw dogs for years. there were a couple of amazing places to order them in the cities where i lived. i miss them sometime but since they are so loaded with sodium, i don't eat them anymore.

Balisha and Sky, thanks for visiting.
I rarely eat hot dogs now
but sometimes they come to mind :)
Keep waiting for family to be here on a windless day and we can light
the firepit and cook some hot dogs and marshmellows :)

It was not the hot dog that I remember, but a simple hamburger made in an old downtown cafe. I can still hear the sound of the screen door opening and closing as customers came in and out. To this day, I have never eaten a better hamburger.

If they were the "made in Michigan" Koegel hot dogs--you never will find another to compare. Time to come back for a visit, a Koegel hot dog and a glass of Vernor's.

Judy, I lover Vernor's. Our local store carries it. Good with ice cream. Guess I lived in Detroit my growing up years 3 years and on.
Returned to my birth place at 23. This is my favorite...

My mom and dad always took us to Pete's HotDogs in upstate New York. Pete's son took over when Pete retired and he moved locations a couple of times. When my sibs get together on that side of the country we always head for Pete's.

I agree with Mary, the simple hamburgers we had now and then were much better that the ones we have now, loaded with all the extras. Perhaps they were so good because we rarely had one.

When I was in school, we would occasionally have "Hot Dog" day. To this day-I have never enjoyed a hot dog more-I think they cost 50cents a piece. And the relish on top was wonderful.
