August

~~August brings a single drenching rain, a few brief showers, and then the pattern of weather reverts to dryness and intense heat.  Nearly every bird song is stilled.  As if to counter-balance the absence of bird songs, the chant of insects rises more shrilly then ever.   At night, the air throbs with the fiddling of katydids and crickets~~

I am dusting my bookcase, it has been a while and I spot "Those Of The Forest" The Natural History Classic by Wallace Byron Grange.   Sitting down I open the book and I read the above paragraph.
My first thought was of dryness, intense heat and the rain that was a pattern through my Spring and Summer here at Woodhaven.

The words reminded me of what will come about this month, so far the intense heat is something that I do not like.     When I read about crickets it made me
think of Fall.    Seems whenever I would hear a cricket in my cottage I knew Fall was on the way.

I also had thoughts of "wonder what our Winter will be like?"
What I do like about Winter are the times I can sit, read and be still.     Home made soups simmering on the stove along with something tasty baking in the oven.

Spring and Summer months are very busy for One Woman.  Very enjoyable, but as the years go by the heat is something I do not tolerate well.

My thoughts need to be on this day and not wander ahead with Fall and Winter predictions.

Last night
evening meal
one small eggplant peeled,  sliced,
brushed with olive oil and garlic,
layered with one tomato from ending garden,
fresh basil and mozzarella cheese, and baked
too perfection....

So easy and tasty....
Another day begins to unfold....

I love your simple meals and summer allows us that. I think we tolerate heat as well, just when we were younger we spent most of our summers indoors or at a pool. Now we garden more and the heat holds us back.

"...dryness and intense heat" the author surely described our weather pattern this summer. Who knows what next winter will bring...hardly had one this past year. I also love your simple meals.

Beautiful words for August. Dusting the shelves in front of the books has been a lick and a promise this summer. Promise day came last weekend sliding, moving and more browsing than I had time for as dog days afternoon heat kept me inside. You reminded me it is quiet. I haven’t heard the clamor of frogs, crickets or katydids this week.

Tabor, the only way to cook is simple and healthy. As we get older the heat tolerance is worse and I have a number of years on you. Mary and Lynn, thank you.
Mary, I have the ingredients on the table for those Bran Muffins...

Yes, I too thought of the coming of fall when I heard the crickets signing and then thought, "yes, it is the 1st of August". Here in the northern hemisphere, August is the beginning of fall in the natural world. It is the arrival of another insect, the fireflies, that reminds me that summer has arrived.

Enjoy this day.

I cannot believe you fixed eggplant, that is what I am having tonight! I am at my son's dog sitting. He gets produce from a local farmer every week and I am heavy on the eggplant, so tonight will be the very same casserole you described!

Better than anything you could get in the most expensive restaurant! I just love it.

Aww...how sweet. I love August as it's my bday month. I used to hate it when i was in India as it is rainy season for us. Here in the US, it's always summer...:) ugh!! It's too hot in the evenings these days..

Nice to meetcha! I'll be back soon, I spend a lot of time in my "ACC" (Air Conditioned Cave) staying out of the Austin, TX August heat from 10 Am 'til dark. Another month of triple digit temperatures before the weather becomes bearable.
