Thief In The Night

When day breaks
I will see if my visitor has returned

Suet cake holder
pulled out of tree
found a distance away
unopened
on the walking trail

Wired more securely back onto tree

Took care of that...

Yesterday morning
holder found further down trail

Plus - iron pole that holds
bird feeder
both on ground

Wonder - if this is a Raccoon
if so

You are strong and may
be a good size

Did not know bird seed
was part of your diet

But if hungry
guess it would be fine

Daybreak
just checked

You did not visit...

Good

We have found a raccoon hanging from one of our feeders stuffing his face one late summer evening. Large squirrels usually do not drag the food away, but try to eat it right there.

I used to think Raccoons were cute...that was before a traveling family did significant damage as they charged through my neighborhood tumbling plants, pots, and anything else in their path. Hope yours is an occasional visitor and not a hanger on!

they can be quite large and very strong!!! one evening last winter when we were dog sitting... the two dogs went out in the dark to go potty...they took a while coming back...we called to them...they came in and then immediately as we closed the glass slider an enormous Raccoon was angrily trying to claw it's way through the door to get to the dogs...the two dogs were doing the same on the inside...it was terribly frightening!!! We think perhaps they disturbed it from slumber or something...anyway...it eventually left...the dogs calmed down...but the paw prints on both side of the door were like a Jackson Pollak of dirty paws on glass!

Tabor, LM and Laurax - thanks for visiting. I know these many acres of woods surrounding my cottage - is home to many critters. Visitors so far - deer, a skunk, squirrels, and the birds.
I keep Callie in at night. Do not want her hurt.

Wow, my imagination wonders if a bear may be out of hibernation and looking for snacks! I'm sure you look at the tracks. Just a thought.

Anyway, so glad the thief did not come back.

Wishing you a good day, dear One Woman! Such a good heart, not caring what hungry animal fed on the suet cake.

Hi Ernestine! My first thought was a bear, too. I hope not! Raccoons can be very strong and if cornered will attack. My sister had them get in her attic and they nearly drove her crazy. They tore her chimney up several times. I bought seeds today at Walmart. It made me feel good and like spring is around the corner. I can't wait. The winter has been so long this year. Have a good weekend.

That's why I no longer feed the birds. I don't think they got much because the ground squirrels beat them to it.

The day I saw a big rat running across my patio was the day I stopped putting seed out.

I first thought of a bear too. We found twin racoons by our porch last year. They were so cute.Don't like to think about how dangerous they can be.Please be careful...Balisha

WM, Judy, Darlene, Balisha, Buttercup - thanks for visiting.
Hope whatever made the visit does not return.

I had that happen to a feeder I had up north at a cottage I use to visit. It was a deer that did the damage.
