Afghan

This afghan was purchased close to 40 years ago.   Bought it when when family lived  in the really big house.
Fall and Winter it is now on the end of my bed.
Very heavy and if extra warmth is needed it comes in handy

I always have the same thoughts in my mind ......
the needles used to crochet this afghan must have been huge
and I always wonder who made something
I have enjoyed for many years.

Many years ago an elderly lady taught me how to crochet.   Afghan's were made for the children, grandchildren
and a few special people.  Anna Lee is no longer living and what wonderful memories I have of her.  I never left her home without a piece of a plant or something she had cooked.
She did not drive and was always home.  Cooking, gardening and all kinds of beautiful handwork occupied her time.  She taught me  a very simple pattern and I have always wished I had someone
close by to instruct me once again.   I think I have forgotten how to sit and crochet.

There is nothing more peaceful then on a very cold or rainy day to sit by the fire and crochet. Absorbed in the counting process, not another thought would enter my mind.    Not realizing at that time in my life that I was practicing a form of mindfulness.

Mindfulness now is practiced with an awareness of what I am doing.

That afghan has held up well. I got a DVD on how to crochet. I'm going to try my hand at it after the first of the year. I do knit, but very simply now...I don't like to have to do complicated things anymore....so my family will have to be satisfied with mittens, scarves and hats. I do some charity knitting...little hats for premature babies.
Have a peaceful day,
Balisha

Sometimes I too keep an afghan at the foot of the bed, just in case the quilts don't keep me warm. I love the peacefulness of crochet and the counting also. Haven't done much in the last few years; quilting has taken its place.

I have a couple that my grandmother made, and though I don't use them, I do love having them. I ought to find some kind of holder on which to display them.

What a lovely old afghan. I've crocheted and knit a few.

Crocheting is soothing. You could look up crocheting tutorials on You Tube that would help refresh your memory. I bet it would come back to you quickly.

Have a lovely Christmas season.

Balisha, Charlotte, Nan and FL,
thank you for visiting.
The thread is the thickest I have ever seen. The picture really does not show how heavy it is.
Need to weigh it:)

I felt like I was right under that Afghan sitting by the fire in a big rocking chair reading this post.

You are more beautiful and mindful than you know.

i love afghans, too. i have made a few in my life, but it has been quite a while. i would have to do a refresher myself! i love the pom-poms on it. very inviting for a nap on a cold winter day. my great aunt made me one when i was in high school, my grandmother left one to my aunt that has now been passed on to me, i made my mother and sister one, and later myself 2. so my house is afghan heavy, every strand of yarn, loved.
