Checkers Mystery

Grandma, play checkers with me. I ask "when did you learn to play checkers" she answered "I play it all the time". I wondered did my daughter and soninlaw teach her. I think not!! I do not think they have a checker game in their home. I questioned further. Did you see someone playing checkers on a video or on television. "No grandma" was the reply. Well where did you learn about checkers. The answer - "At the Cracker Barrel - grandma."
Now if you do not live in the South you may not be familiar with this country eating place. Then maybe this country restaurant is all over. I do not know.
I do know that when you go in the front door towards the eating area there is a large checker board with checkers in front of a wood burning fire place. So that solved the mystery of my little girls knowledge of checkers.
Who would have thought that a 3 year old would be that knowledgable of the checker game from observing others in a restaurant.
Makes me wonder what else are these little ones observing when we are not aware and what they are learning.

A memory made this sunny afternoon on the porch of One Woman.

Heh heh, those little ones are all eyes and ears! Sometimes amazing sometimes scary what they learn on their own..

They don't miss anything! My 19 month old grandson knows where everything is in my house.

We do have a Cracker Barrel in Tucson. I guess we are considered Southerners, although we are technically Southwesterners.

Little ones are like blotters; they absorb everything.

My youngest granddaughter was 4 years old when she was going to teach me how to play chess. It turned out that she didn't know how either.

Anne, Judy and Darlene, thank you for your comments. You are oh so right. I love the comments of these two youngest granddaughters.

I like Cracker Barrel for the rare breakfast, but the rest of the country food you can keep...overcooked and not healthy. Little children are sponges to repeat the cliche and they learn everything we don't and do want them to learn.

Tabor, yesterday on the way to the country I thought I would treat myself to breakfast at the Cracker Barrel. Just a scrambled egg, bacon and sour dough toast and decaf coffee. I am not a coffee person but it seemed right on this morning. In front of the roaring fire - I felt like I was on a mini vacation. Agree on the rest of the food.

How brilliant of your granddaughter to pick up on the game of checkers!

It does make one wonder about what else these little, dear minds are picking up on...

Great post...
